Last year, members got to unleash their inner fashion designer, for a creative challenge set by the Arts Sub-Committee – to come up with a modern, stylish design for a lady’s fashion scarf that could be worn by WI members!
We are delighted to now announce the overall winner of the ‘Design a WI Scarf’ competition’ …
Huge congratulations to⭐️Therese Mageean of Saintfield WI!⭐️
Here is her winning design, which will be made into a beautiful scarf for distribution, printed by leading eco-friendly textile design studio Pixalili, based on the Wild Atlantic Way, Co. Donegal.
Therese commented, “My design is inspired by ‘A Countrywoman’s Song’ – the NI landscape of the Mourns and Sperrins, washed in the colours of the heather and hedges. The flax flower is over stencilled in an almost ethereal way, to represent how it was once grown widely and a major industry in the province.”
The team at Pixalili advised that Therese’s design would look best in landscape, on a very soft, floaty fabric, with the design at each end of the scarf, as it is draped in soft folds. The length in between a beautiful blue, with the colours of the sky graduating into it.

… 2nd place…
…and here is the lovely runner-up design – by Eileen Richmond of Macosquin WI.
Well done Eileen!

While Therese’s winning design will be transformed into a real life scarf for sale, Eileen’s runner-up design has been brought to life as a beautiful WI cushion!
