Derriaghy WI welcomed visitors from Ballydownfine, Finaghy, Dunmurry and Killultagh to their April meeting. The speaker was Lisa Duggan from Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive.

Lisa began by showing what is believed to be one of the earliest recordings of everyday life in Belfast – recorded on the ‘new-fangled’ motion cameras. At the time such recordings were believed to be novelties which would ‘never catch on’.  Lisa had selected some clips from 1952, the year when Derriaghy WI was founded, together with recordings featuring some local industries and landmarks.

The ladies relived summer holidays in Bangor and Ballycastle and were reminded of the diversity of the Northern Ireland economy in the 1950s and 60s. The event concluded with a delicious afternoon tea served by the Derriaghy members.

If anyone would like to come along to future Derriaghy WI events, please contact WI Headquarters (Tel: 028 9030 1506).

Derriaghy WI is indebted to the National Lottery Community Fund for subsidising this event.
