Guest speaker:
Jim Ledwith
Founding Trustee of the Fermanagh Trust, Fermanagh’s Community Foundation, Jim has had a life-long obsession with the folk tradition of masking.
Masked ritual folk actors called mummers / rhymers / hogmanay men have often been portrayed as the hidden heritage of the countryside, bringing mayhem into households at Christmas.
Jim will bring this to life, and set your minds at rest, by recounting what was a most popular form of community entertainment. Jim will also explore the wedding custom of strawboys, intrusions that brought a guarantee of good fortune for newlyweds.
Helped by a craft display of mumming straw costumes and trickery, his display of mumming dolls will bring people into another world, which was a traditional highlight of the calendar year.
