Festival of the Spoken Word 2016

The Festival of the Spoken Word was held on Saturday 22nd October 2016 in St Lurach’s Parish Church Hall, Maghera.  Chairman of the Arts Sub-Committee Carole Baird welcomed everyone and introduced the adjudicator Mrs Shelagh O’Brien.  The ladies of Maghera WI provided tea and scones in the morning and a delicious lunch consisting of hearty soup.  Federation Chairman Elizabeth Warden presented the awards to the talents winners and Margaret Broome proposed a comprehensive Vote of Thanks on behalf of the Arts Sub-Committee. It was a very entertaining day, a wonderful showcase of the talent in the WI. The afternoon closed traditionally with the singing of A Countrywoman’s Song.

 

The award winners were:

 

Class 1 – Magherafelt Trophy – Prepared Speech

1st – Ellen McKenna of Donaghmore WI

2nd – Iris Coburn of Moneymore WI

       

Class 2 – Armoy Trophy – Sight Reading

1st – Karen Cathers of Ballygawley WI

2nd – Beverley Simpson of Armoy WI

 

Class 3 – Lambeg Trophy – Poem by an Irish Poet

1st – Karen Cathers of Ballygawley WI

Joint 2nd – Maura Johnston of Moneymore WI & Hazel Campbell of Crumlin WI

 

Class 4 – Phillipine McCoy Trophy – Humorous Verse

1st – Anna Murphy of Kells & Connor WI

2nd – Katy McCurdy of Armoy WI

 

Class 5 – Aileen Chapman Trophy – Poem written by a WI Member

1st – Ellen McKenna of Donaghmore WI

2nd – Anna Murphy of Kells & Connor WI

 

Class 6 – Downpatrick Trophy – Prepared Prose

1st – Karen Cathers of Ballygawley WI

Joint 2nd – Katy McCurdy of Armoy  WI, Patricia Gilchrist of Downpatrick WI & Anna Murphy of Kells & Connor WI
