Pamela introduced our speaker; Mrs. Carol Walker M.B.E. Director of the Somme Museum who showed members slides and gave a very informative talk about Women’s dress and fashion in the early 20th Century.

This lead to the Suffragette History, about how women finally got the right to vote, and go into Politics.

A brief history was given of some of the women who fought for women’s rights, these where, Winifred Carney, Bell Docktar, Dorothy Lawrence, Florrie Sands. Jessie Getty and Elsie Maud Engels, to name but a few.

Jenny Clarke gave the vote of thanks and after supper the minutes of the previous meeting where read.

Members were given Diary dates as follows;

Autumn Council Meeting, Festival of the spoken word, Festival of food and flowers, Arts one day school.

Competition Winner for “A scarf”, Pam Wells and Maureen Marsh.

Birthday girls, Elsie Strain, Jenny Clarke.

Pamela announced next month as well as Sugar Craft by Jennifer and Andrea; we will have a talk by the Community Police about being aware of Scams etc. The competition change will be a Christmas Tea Towel.

The meeting was concluded with the singing of “The Country Women’s Song”.


Next month:  ” Sugarcraft” by Jennifer and Andrea also a talk by Community Police about Scamming!
