WI at the City of Belfast Autumn Flower Show 2018
This year the City of Belfast Autumn Flower Show ran on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September in Botanic Gardens, Belfast and the Women’s Institute was once again asked to run a class for members. Over the two days, the marquee was a hive of activity and colour and this event was another great public showcase for the WI.
The theme for the competition this year was entitled ‘Centenary Celebrations’ in recognition of the special 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. Members taking part were tasked with creatively displaying the following items on a card table to suitably reflect the title: a decorated madeira cake, five ginger biscuits, a floral arrangement in an enamel container, a child’s smocked dress and a cross stitch sampler.
All of the entries were beautiful and in keeping with the theme, but they were all very different in colour and style. The standard, as always, was very high and all of the exhibits were greatly admired by fellow WI ladies and members of the public passing through during the two days of the Show.
The winning entry, gaining first place overall, was the team effort of the Donaghadee and Ballyblack WIs, who were awarded the prestigious Northern Bank Trophy for their display. Maghaberry WI placed second overall, with Moneyrea WI coming third, and the Abercorn Area fourth. Congratulations to the winning Institutes and well done to all of those who took the time to put together an entry!
