Snippets of WI Life!

 

Now that some form of normality has returned and Institutes are holding official, face-to-face meetings again, our traditional Institute New reports return!  For future reference, if you are submitting a report for publication in the Ulster Countrywoman, please follow the format of the condensed, edited versions that are published in the magazine.  

 

News reports only need to give a brief synopsis of your meeting and should not be too lengthy.  The word limit is approx. 70 words per monthly meeting (give or take!)

 

Don’t forget, you can also submit photographs of your meetings and activities for the main Features section of the magazine, as well as for the WI Facebook page.

Aghadowey                   President Betty Hazlett welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the New Year.  The guest speaker was Alan McClarty who discussed his mental and physical health journey over the past few years. While going through difficult times, Alan decided to add positivity to his life by taking up new activities – running, which led to half marathons, and local quizzing, which led to applications for TV quiz shows!  He has since featured on the popular TV show Beat the Chasers.  Irma Kee proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Aghanloo                       In December, the ladies were able to get together in the Drummond Hotel for the Institute’s Christmas dinner. Many members attended and everyone enjoyed a lovely meal, great fun and fellowship, all whilst adhering to Covid regulations.

In January 2022, the group met in the Community Hall as usual. President Lorna welcomed everyone, wishing all a Happy New Year.  WI business was conducted, before some fun games of bingo, led by Bernie and Kate and then Alayne and Cherry.  There was lots of laughter and plenty of healthy competition to see who could win the prizes – hand sanitiser or dishcloths!

 

Annahilt               In December, President Miriam Hunter welcomed guest speaker Ian McClure, who gave a fascinating talk on the history of clocks. Ian displayed a selection of clocks, including a wooden one which he had made. The Birthday Girls were Isobel McMullan and Yvonne Coyle. The evening ended with Secret Santa gifts.

In January, the guest speaker was Lesley Bartholomew, who gave an illustrated presentation, including video footage, of her 500 mile walk in Spain in aid of the NI Hospice and in memory of her late husband, Fred. The competition for an interesting key ring was won by: 1st Madeline McMullan, 2nd Christine McConaghy, 3rd Miriam Hunter.

The guest speaker at the February meeting was former Federation Chairman Elizabeth Warden, who works as a solicitor.  Elizabeth outlined the importance of making a Will and taking the precaution of executing an Enduring Power of Attorney. Everyone received excellent explanatory leaflets to take home. The birthday girl was Florence Annett.

 

Artana                   6th December 2021 was Christmas party time! President Elizabeth Cross welcomed the brave ladies who had to defrost their car windshields to travel!  It was a fun, festive evening, featuring a selection of games – and feasting on delicious mince pies and shortbread!  Members had dressed up in their Christmas outfits and the best dressed was chosen by placing Pennies for Friendship at the favourite names.  The competition was won by June Scott with her flashing jumper and animated, musical hat!  2nd was Elma Somerville, and 3rd Elizabeth Cross.

 

Armoy                        Members were reunited in February. It was great to see each other again and hear the chatter of conversation in the hall. President Katy McCurdy welcomed everyone wholeheartedly. She handed the floor over to Dr Adrian Sterne, who gave an informative health talk on heart matters – which definitely made everyone think about lifestyle choices!  Betty Robinson proposed the vote of thanks. Refreshments were provided by the Catering Committee. Afterwards, WI business matters were dealt with.  Plans were made for the March meeting – get your dancing shoes on girls, we’re having a dancing session!

 

Ballievey                On 2nd February, the Ballievey ladies met for their Institute’s birthday dinner at the Belmont Hotel. After a beautiful meal, the entertainment was provided by the non-Committee members – and competition was fierce! Janet McAlister was congratulated on receiving her MBE.  The monthly competition was a cake slice and the winners were: 1st Iris Megaw, 2nd Majorie Adams. Ballot prizes were won by Hester Martin, Leslie Martin and Peggy Powers.

On a cool March evening, Ballievey WI met in the Young Farmers Hall.  Janet Toal was the inspiring guest speaker – on mindfulness, relaxation, restfulness and yoga, with members joining in with everything from the comfort of their chairs! The competition tips for a healthy mind placed as follows: 1st Peggy Powers, 2nd Iris Megaw.  Marjorie Adams was the lucky ballot winner.

 

Ballintoy                  In December, the guest speaker was Andy McClarty from Garvagh who made beautiful Christmas wreaths and planters, whilst keeping the members entertained with his witty stories. Through his flower and plant sales, Andy donates all the money raised to Macmillan Cancer. The Ballintoy WI ladies have helped him raise £13,890 to date.

 

Ballyblack                 President Libby Rankin welcomed everyone to the February meeting. Joan Moore was congratulated on her 80th birthday and received a pot plant from the Institute. Members also learnt that Eleanor Johnston had won the Stedfast Salver in the ‘Good Handwriting Open’ class at the Federation Arts Festival. Committee member Valerie had organised a fun quiz, which resulted in lots of chat and laughter. Libby Rankin was the birthday girl.

 

Ballyclare                    At Ballyclare WI, the ladies started the New Year on a very positive note as several new people came along to the first meeting! The guest speaker was Stuart Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer for the borough. Using relevant incidents, Stuart’s presentation encompassed two areas – home security and scams.  Along with information literature, he also left the ladies with the following mantra: ‘If it seems too good to be true, then it is!’

 

Ballydownfine                          The first meeting of 2022 was held on 14th February, with a welcome visit from Executive Member Marie Darrah, who shared the latest Federation news. Marie later took the chance to chat to members during a delicious Valentine-themed tea. Gertie Carson was congratulated on winning the Moorcroft Salver in the Federation Arts Festival for her lovely ‘Any Other Medium’ dog painting.  Everyone joined in with a light-hearted Beetle Drive and Patricia Gallagher emerged victorious.  The birthday girl was Gertie Carson.

 

Ballygawley                          President Violet Little welcomed everyone in January.  Secretary Nan read the minutes and correspondence.  The competition was a challenge to find the item of clothing with the most buttons!  The guest speaker was Gerry Knight from the council’s Disability Advisory Group.  Gerry gave an informative talk and answered questions put to him by the members.  Violet proposed a vote of thanks and presented Gerry with a gift.  Supper was served by Elizabeth Smiton and Margaret Rainey.

 

Ballygrainey                         President Fay Higgins welcomed everyone in February.  Secretary Vera Kerr shared details of upcoming events, both at Area and Federation level. Ballygrainey WI is hoping to host a coffee morning for members and friends to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee on 2nd June.  Fellow member Emily Carson led everyone through a creative workshop to produce a pretty Easter gift.  The ladies later relaxed with a welcome cup of tea and plans were made for an afternoon of storytelling in March.

 

Ballymoney                        The November meeting was held in Dalriada school – a creative session to prepare for Christmas! The ladies enjoyed decorating candles, making door wreaths using natural materials, and generally making the ordinary look extraordinary with a little festive sparkle!

Ballynure                           Vice-President Jeannie Lynd welcomed everyone to the February meeting, where Covid regulations were once again followed.  There was knitting, crochet and plenty of chat and craic! Business was attended to and plans were made for the March meeting. Members had brought along some provisions to donate to the local food bank. Isobel Bingham won the magazine prize and everyone enjoyed a tasty supper.

 

Ballysallagh              For their Christmas meeting, members enjoyed a lovely evening in Helen’s Bay Golf Club.

Covid played havoc with the January plans, so in February members were back to their usual meeting!  The guest speaker was Peter Lyons who enlightened the group on the work of the Woodland Trust. After the usual business, supper was served and the evening closed on a light-hearted note with a funny story from Sylvia.

 

Beragh                   In January, the guest speaker was Alan Neil, a photographer for the Tyrone Constitution newspaper.  Alan recalled the highs and lows of his career – from the sadness of the Omagh bomb, to the visits of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during the Golden Jubilee Tour, as well as anecdotes of Tony Blair, President Clinton and his wife Hilary. Mary Patterson was presented with a beautiful bouquet for her diamond wedding anniversary.
In February, a very successful ‘bring and buy’ sale was held to raise funds for the Institute’s platinum anniversary celebrations in Corick House Hotel, on 7th March 2022. Members enjoyed an evening of nostalgia, sharing memories and stories from down the years, as photographs and memorabilia sat on display.  The Beragh ladies are looking forward to celebrating their special 70th milestone with friends and special guests.

 

Boardmills                 In January, the ladies were welcomed by President Agnes who wished everyone a Happy New Year. The guest speaker was Brian Johnston, who entertained with humorous stories, poems and limericks. It was lovely to start 2022 with fun and laughter.  Multi-talented Brian also got musical on the accordion, playing popular catchy songs that everyone recognised.  Members were able to purchase Brian’s new book, ‘More Humorous Stories’, in aid of Motor Neurone Disease. During supper, the competition was judged: 1st Ruth, 2nd Valerie, 3rd June.

At the February meeting, the guest speaker was Debbie Quinn who guided the ladies through a session of armchair aerobics.  The exercises were fun and easy to follow and Debbie’s friendly manner ensured that everyone went home feeling rejuvenated and ready for anything! The competition winners were: 1st Ann, 2nd June, 3rd Lily.

 

Brookeborough                     In spite of the fact that Covid was still rife in the county, the ladies made plans to re-start meetings for the season, but decided that, until June, they would not invite any visiting speakers, and instead would draw on the talents of fellow members!  They reunited in a new venue, the Station House, with a light-hearted start to proceedings – a Beetle Drive, suitably modified to comply with social distancing!

In December, fellow member Jean Parsons enchanted everyone with a flower arranging demonstration entitled ‘Winter Wonderland’. The ladies were also delighted to be joined by Erne Area Executive Member Rhoda Farrelly.

The group did not meet again until February, when fellow member Eileen Dunn, a keen amateur photographer, took everyone on a trip down memory lane with her captivating collection of photographs taken over the last fifty years.

 

Broughshane                       President Annie Davison’s daughter, Sarah was the guest speaker at the January meeting.  Sarah volunteered for 6 weeks at the Refugee Community Kitchen in Calais, France.  This charity provides hot meals for up to 1,500 refugees per day, mainly young men fleeing war-torn countries, desperately seeking asylum the UK.  It was interesting to hear Sarah’s perspective on this humanitarian crisis.  Sandra Adams gave the vote of thanks.  The competition for a vegetarian recipe was won by Marie Harvey.

In February, Sandy Wilson and Valerie Blake visited from Broughshane Community Association, discussing post-Covid community planning, with members expressing their views in a questionnaire. International Officer Marie Harvey gave an inspiring talk on current ACWW Projects. Beverly Kidd was the caller for a fun game of bingo – the winners were Pat Hayes, Iris McCosh and Clare Barr. Pat Hayes also won the magazine draw.  Ann McMaster won the postcard competition. After supper, Mary Knox shared floral art tips for Spring.

 

Caledon                     Vice-President Margaret Nicholson welcomed everyone to the March meeting, especially Roberta Shilliday who was proposed and seconded as a new member.  Good wishes were conveyed to President Teresa for a speedy recovery.  The guest speaker was aromatherapist Arlene McEvoy, who shared her expertise on various essential oils and aromatherapy. The competition for a pretty perfume bottle was won by: 1st Joyce McCoy, 2nd Irene Marshall.

 

Carrickfergus                     In November, the guest speaker was floral artist Jean Robinson.  In preparation for the meeting, Jean had bought some flowers, but also foraged in her garden and hedgerows for foliage and berries. She produced four very beautiful flower arrangements, which were balloted at the end of the night.

December was Christmas Night!  Pat Beggs and Pamela Robinson conducted a cookery demonstration – Pamela made smoked bacon and Wensleydale soup, cheesy mushroom risotto and strawberry panna cotta, and Pat made a Bailey’s trifle and white chocolate fruit bites. The ladies did a great job with the limited facilities they had, and everyone got to sample the tasty treats, setting the mood for Christmas.

The February meeting opened with the sad news that much-loved honorary member Martha DuBois had passed away.  Martha had been a WI member for over 50 year and held various roles in office. She will be missed. After WI business, the guest speaker was introduced – Andrea Ellis, who talked about the complementary Bach Flower Therapy. All the ladies received a free sample oil.  The competition for a health tip was won by Betty Brennan.

 

Carryduff                   The ladies got together on 10th January to enjoy a cookery demonstration by local chef Gary, accompanied by his helper Sarah.  Gary showed the group how to make two very tasty sauces, which each member got to sample.  The competition for a sauce boat was won by: 1st Elaine, 2nd Rhubina, 3rd Jane.  The meeting finished in traditional style with the singing of A Countrywoman’s Song.

 

Clanabogan                        A small turnout gathered for the first proper meeting since March 2020!   Members were updated on the Institute’s financial state and the necessity to generate much needed funds.  Some members made plans to attend Beragh WI’s 70th anniversary dinner, as well as the Federation’s AGM in the Europa Hotel.  In an effort to get back to normal, a programme is being compiled for the remainder of the season.  Over a cup of tea, everyone enjoyed a long overdue chat and a catchup.

 

Collone                     President Jennifer Towers welcomed everyone to the February meeting, including new member Linda Pollock. Business matters were addressed; Linda was congratulated on her article in the magazine, and Ann on winning the monthly competition. Despite some normality returning, guest speakers and homemade goodies are still absent from the meetings, but tea, biscuits, fun and friendship were on the agenda! Everyone participated in a modified game of Beetle and a short quiz, organised by Ann Patton. Members are keen to resume meetings on a monthly basis.

 

Crossgar                 In December, members were welcomed with a glass of Shloer. Libby Brown gave a demonstration of her fantastic craftwork, which included knitting, Aran, box making and macramé. Olga, Libby and Lorna then helped everyone make Christmas crackers, present boxes and Christmas napkins. The competition for a homemade Christmas tree decoration was won by: 1st Libby Brown, 2nd Joan Gordon, 3rd Maureen Lyons. The birthday girl was Hilary Brooks. Elizabeth Hutchinson won the ballot.

In January, President Lorna wished everyone a Happy New Year, with a special welcome to Eileen Emerson and her daughter Elizabeth. Eileen was presented with an honorary membership certificate in recognition of 51 years as a faithful WI member.  ‘Sit and Get Fit’ was the order of the night, as guest speaker Marietta Lanney put members through their paces, exercising from head to toe!  The Competition ‘New Year, New You’ was won by: 1st Lorna Stevenson, 2nd Eileen Smyth, 3rd Ethne Douglas. The birthday girl was Deirdre Kennedy.  Frances Price won the ballot.

 

Cullybackey                          Vice-President Rosemary Kennedy welcomed members to the first meeting of the New Year.  Mary Cruikshank read a poem about an alternative Christmas. Rosemary updated the ladies on the progress of two current ACCW projects.   With 2022 being the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, it was rather appropriate that the guest speaker was Derek Kerr an ardent fan of Her Majesty the Queen!  Derek related many lovely stories about the Royal Family and displayed commemorative items with Royal connections.   Joan Stevenson gave a vote of thanks.

 

Culmore                  In December, the Christmas dinner was held in the City Hotel. There was a great turnout and the ladies were delighted to welcome back President Dawn, who recently recovered from Covid.  A fun, festive night was had by all.

The members got together again in January. It was good to see Dawn back in the driving seat but it was a sad occasion too, as members learnt that regular quizmaster George, wife of member Ann Coyle, had passed away. A minute’s silence was observed in his honour.  New members Shiela Crawley and Margaret McIntyre were warmly welcomed.  Margaret McIntyre won first prize in the game, with Avril Hyndman second.

President Dawn opened the February meeting and welcomed Hugh Gilliland as the quizmaster for the night.  Members were divided into 4 teams and the winners were ‘The 3 Degrees’ (Collette, Nuala and Kathleen).  After the auction, everyone enjoyed a lovely supper.

 

Derriaghy                 The Derriaghy ladies were glad to get meeting again in February, following Covid fears in January.  The planned speaker was unable to attend, so instead members played a few games of bingo, had lovely refreshments, and then were able to spend time discussing the proposed activities for the Institute’s 70th anniversary.  (Not quite as lavish as Her Majesty!)

The ladies have been able to make these plans thanks to a grant from the Nation Lottery Community Fund. New member Isobel Jamison was welcomed to swell the ranks!

 

Desertcreat                  The November meeting saw an increasing number of ladies return to the hall.  The guest speaker was the wonderful John Paul Coyle, visitor services manager at the Ulster American Folk Park.  John Paul gave an insight into his work in the Folk Park and displayed an array of historical artefacts, including a lady’s clay pipe. Members were amazed by stories of impoverished people who left Ireland for America and became extremely wealthy.  The competition for an American souvenir was won jointly by Maureen Steele Graham and Glynis Armstrong.

The first meeting of 2022 was held in the Desertcreat WI hall.   President Maureen Steele Graham welcomed everyone, including her husband Patrick Graham – the guest speaker for the evening!  Patrick gave an interesting talk on the history of Parkanaur, outlining how Parkanaur College and Residential Care Home was initially set up there.  The competition for a photograph of an old local building was won by the President.  The meeting concluded with tea and buns.

 

Donaghadee                      The February meeting took place in Donaghadee Golf Club. President Yvonne McIlwaine extended a warm welcome to the 30 members present. A delicious lunch was enjoyed and friendships renewed. Birthday pens were presented to Nan Carson and Audrey Henderson for January, and Frances Bowles and Joan Mulligan for February. The competition for an old receipt was won by: 1st Anne Johnston (1926), 2nd Joan Cree (1961), 3rd Esther McKimm (an old family receipt book).  Lots of ballot prizes were handed out following the lunch.

 

Drumahoe                  President Frances McGirr welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2022 and to the first one back in the school.  A moment of silent reflection was observed in memory of long-serving member Hilary McClean and former member Hazel Canning.  The Area Spring Meeting was discussed, with various duties allocated.  After a quick supper, members headed for home, with plans for a March meeting – Covid guidelines pending.

 

Drumbeg                 In January, the Drumbeg ladies enjoyed their much-anticipated annual dinner at Dunmurry Golf Club. It was worth the wait and did not disappoint!

The February meeting was held in the Belsize Masonic Hall.  The guest speaker was from NI Screen Digital Archives and she brought back many memories from film footage of the greater Lisburn area. On Saturday 19th February, a special Craft/Cookery Day was held in Braniel Hall. During the morning craft session, the ladies made either a picture or brooch in different fabrics under the expert instruction of Laura McAleese from the Homecraft Sub-Committee. The afternoon cookery session was a demonstration by celebrity chef Suzie Lee, who is from the Lisburn area. Suzie was the winner of the BBC TV show Best Home Cook 2020. She demonstrated several dishes, making it looks effortless, and, of course, members got to sample her delicious goodies!

 

Drumcree                    The January meeting took the form of a Music Night, with Pauline McClelland accompanying on piano.  Everyone enjoyed singing along to songs from bygone days.  Pat Cousins gave a vote of thanks to Pauline and presented her with a small gift.  Members were reminded of the Badminton Table Quiz in memory of the late Rea Taylor – a faithful and much-loved member of Drumcree WI.  The competition for a pretty brooch was won by Helen Carrick.  Johanna Robinson was the birthday girl.  Sandra Hobson won the supper prize.

President Johanna welcomed guest speaker Heather Stewart to the February meeting.  Heather demonstrated how to decorate plain picture frames and candles.  She also discussed her craft business and the workshops she runs from her home.  Iris Aiken proposed a vote of thanks and presented a donation for a cancer charity in memory of Heather’s little granddaughter.  The competition for a Valentine verse was won by Jean Clarke.  Joan Traynor was the birthday girl. Roberta Hall won the supper prize

 

Dundonald                        President Moyra Campbell welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2022 and wished a Happy New Year to all.  The Annual Quiz was facilitated by Keith Nash, even though there would be no subsequent rounds this year. Muriel Whyte won the Ann Horner Bowl presented to the Quiz winner. Ann McKinley and Rita Kirkpatrick were joint runners-up. Heather Grahame, who proposed the vote of thanks to Keith, was the birthday girl. Ballot prizes were won by Lillian Coleman and Muriel Whyte. An ‘On the Spot’ competition for the greatest amount of coinage in a purse, was won by Ann McKinley. Members chatted over a socially distanced cup of tea.

The guest speaker at the February meeting was Colin Millar MBE. Colin had his audience enthralled as he recounted an educational trip to China, where he contracted Swine Flu. (His story is an amazing one of fight and faith, and though frighteningly horrifying, he tells it with great humour). Colin, who was thanked by Muriel Whyte, judged Rita Kirkpatrick to be the winner of the ‘Unusual Pen’ competition. Carolyn Boyd was the Birthday Girl. During business, President Moyra Campbell outlined the programme planned for the months ahead. Everyone was given a copy of the Healthy Ageing Calendar, made available from Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

 

Dungannon                   A long last, the Dungannon ladies were able to hold their first official face-to-face meeting since March 2020! President Fiona welcomed members and remembered those who suffered or had been bereaved since the last get-together.  She read a reflection entitled ‘Hope’ – which reminded everyone that hope helped people get through the pandemic. After WI business was completed, a cup to tea and biscuits were enjoyed as the ladies caught up on each other’s news and hoped for better days to come.

 

Eglinton                     President Karen welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2022 and wished everyone a Happy New Year.  The guest speaker was Claire Bond from Claire Elizabeth Bespoke Jewellery.  Claire designs and makes her own jewellery and also customises pieces.  She displayed of some of her products.  The competition for the prettiest piece of jewellery was won by Irene Boggs, who also gave the vote of thanks.

The February meeting had a Valentine theme, as it was held on 14th February!  It was also Members’ Night and a trivia game was played, involving members answering questions about famous couples.  Everyone joined with playing pairs for a memory game.  Tea was served with heart shaped shortbread!

 

Fintona                     The ladies met on 9th February, after a long break of almost two years due to Covid restrictions!  President Laine Turner was pleased at such a strong turnout and welcomed everyone back to the fold.  An enjoyable game of “Who Am I?” was played.  There were some hilarious moments, as Daniel O’Donnell, Mary Berry, Boris Johnston and the Duchess of Cornwall were some of the characters who appeared!  Plans were made for the March meeting, when the guest speaker will be Kate Law, whose topic will be ‘The Spring Garden’.

 

Fivemiletown                     The February meeting was held in The Buttermarket on February 1st (St. Bridgid’s Day).  President Florence Brunt welcomed everyone and displayed a lovely St. Bridgid’s Cross that she had made many years before – a small cross woven from rushes, typically with 4 arms and a woven square in the middle. These crosses are associated with Bridgid of Kildare, one of the Patron Saints of Ireland. Traditionally made in Ireland on St. Bridgid’s Feast Day, they mark the beginning of Spring and would be set over doorways and windows to protect the home from any kind of harm.  The meeting concluded with supper.

 

 Garvagh                             In January, President Kirsten welcomed everyone with a Happy New Year, especially new member Nonglak McFadden.  The guest speaker was Rev. Carmen Hayes who enthralled with his life story, ‘Giant Steps and Baby Steps’.  The competition for the prettiest shoe was won by: 1st Doreen Campbell, 2nd Betty Holmes.

At the February meeting plants got underway to celebrate the Institute’s 90th anniversary this year, which will start with afternoon tea in the drawing room of Woodbank House on the actual day that, 90 years ago, the first meeting of Garvagh WI was held!  A special anniversary dinner will also take place on 13th September.  The guest speaker was Anne McMaster, playwright and author. Anne shared the path her life had taken and captivated the audience with poems from her book ‘Walking Off the Land’.  Anne’s poetry depicts a disappearing way of life – her rural childhood on a small Ulster farm. The competition for a Valentine verse was won by Gill McCullough.

 

Glarryford                   The Glarryford ladies have returned to regular monthly meetings and in January they received lots of tips and advice to stay safe and avoid scams from the Mid and East Antrim Crime Prevention Officer. The competition for the prettiest phone cover was won by Marian Gregg. Romance was in the air in February when members enjoyed a special Valentine Tea, which was supplied by the ladies of the Committee, followed by a trip down memory lane with videos and photos of community events through the decades supplied by Ernest O’Hara. The competition for the smallest jug was won by Annie Johnston.

 

Glenanne               In February, President Carole Baird welcomed everyone including new member, Denise Alexander. Get well wishes were expressed to Betty Stewart. Sympathy was extended to Olive Cornett, Lena Brown and Jenny Anderson on their recent bereavements.  Carole shared details about the Federation AGM and Balmoral Show.  Members then got creative making decorative greeting cards supplied by the President. Supper was provided by Elizabeth Morrison and Elizabeth Woolsey.

In March, the ladies welcomed Teressa and Majella from the Rural Health Partnership, who spoke on ‘Wellbeing for Women and Men’.  They offer services for mental and physical health, with activities for communities across South Armagh. Roberta read an amusing story, followed by Christine who read the minutes from the previous meeting.  Information was shared regarding Armagh Show. The monthly competition was won by Eleanor.

 

Hillhall                 President Anna welcomed members to the Christmas party in December, along with special guest Sheelagh McRandal, Federation Treasurer/Lagan Area Executive Member. Maud Wilson displayed some of her beautiful crochet and knitted handcrafts, and Molly showcased her exquisite embroidery. Maud, Molly, Lorna and friends were thanked for the food and wonderful decorations in the hall.  Sheelagh presented the Mourne Cup for poetry to Roberta Ferguson.  After enjoying some Festive fare, the meeting closed with the singing of Carols and A Countrywoman’s Song. 

Instead of the usual January dinner, the Hillhall ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch in the beautiful surroundings of Malone Golf Club. President Anna Scott said Grace and welcoming members, remembered those unable to attend due to illness. After the meal, everyone took part in a head scratching quiz – appropriately with a body parts theme!  On behalf of all the members, Dorothy Simpson thanked the President and Committee.

The February meeting opened with a minute’s silence to remember two well-loved members who had recently passed away – honorary member Dolly Watson (who was in her 102nd year) and Betty Milford (beloved sister of fellow member Gwen Conlin). Both enthusiastic ladies, who will be greatly missed.  Secretary Davina brought everyone up to date with news of upcoming WI events, after which, Joanne Templeton from LCCC gave an inspiring talk on recycling household waste.  Roberta won the competition, Vera won the ballot and Mildred received the birthday flowers.  Once again it was a delight to be back with WI friends!

 

Irvinestown                       Despite the atrocious weather conditions, the Irvinestown ladies met in the Bawnacre Centre, Irvinestown on Wednesday, 8th December 2021.  After President Rhoda Farrelly had welcomed everyone, entertainment commenced with a Christmas themed quiz, provided by Secretary Margaret Gray. The challenge for the competition was wearing a Christmas item. The worthy winner was Gwen Pattison. Raffle prizes included some table arrangements created by Rhoda Farrelly. The lucky winners were Eileen Turner, Margaret Beacom and Louise George.

 

Jerrettspass                        The Jerrettspass ladies met on 12th January 2022.  President Anne Lutton welcomed everyone, wishing all a Happy New Year.  Anne and Shauna provided the activity for the night which consisted of making lovely little boxes to hold small presents and sweets. Each lady went home with a finished box, decorated with a suitable ribbon. Everyone enjoyed the night – it was just so lovely to catch up with each other again!

The meeting on 9th February consisted of a Craft Night, when all the members got together to knit small animals for Balmoral Show. Cups of tea and biscuits, provided by tea hostess Sadie, kept everyone going, and the ladies enjoyed plenty of chat and craic as they got to work on their toys.

 

Kells & Connor                    The February meeting took the form of an interesting talk by Joan Kelly of Topps Colour & Image Consultancy.   Fellow member Helen Reid was given a colour analysis – and ordinarily would have had her make up applied, but due to the Covid situation this was not possible! The competition for a novelty container was won by: 1st Sally Harper, 2nd Iris Manson, 3rd Ruby McSeveney.  The vote of thanks was given by Jean Smith. The magazine winner was Maybeth Ferguson. Mary Crothers was congratulated on her 36th wedding anniversary.

A number of members attended the Institute’s annual February outing.  This year it was the turn of the ‘Calendar Girls’ production, which was held in the Magherabuoy House Hotel.  Lots of fun and laughter was had by all who attended and everyone enjoyed a delicious meal afterwards in the Hotel.

 

Kesh                      President Jackie Savva, welcomed everyone to the February meeting.  The guest speaker was Rhoda Farrelly, Erne Area Executive Member/Chairman of the International Sub-Committee. Rhoda gave a very informative talk on her role and the work of the International Sub-Committee. Margaret Lyttle proposed the vote of thanks. Congratulations were extended to Jackie Savva and Pat Hey on their successful entries in the recent Federation Arts Festival.  The monthly competition was won by Maureen Kyle. Rhoda Farrelly was the lucky ballot winner.

 

Killinchy                              The Killinchy ladies enjoyed a Movie Night on 1st March, when they got together (along with a selection of sweets!) to watch ‘The Suffragettes’.  This was their first time in the new meeting room at Lisbane.  After the film, a lovely supper was served.  The birthday girls for March were Mavis Russell, Jackie Bennett, Eileen Reid and Pamela Shanks. President Pamela also celebrated her special birthday and was presented with a lovely trough of Spring plants.

 

Killycurragh                 President Jenny welcomed everyone to the January meeting, which featured a ‘bring and buy’ sale of miscellaneous items and unwanted Christmas presents.  The proceeds of this will help to swell Institute finances!  The competition for 6 cheesecakes was won by Doreen Crawford. A welcome cuppa was served, and the meeting closed with the singing of A Countrywoman’s Song.

In February, the guest speaker was Andrea Harkness who demonstrated the art of decoupage and displayed examples of her work for members to view.  The vote of thanks to Andea was proposed by Pearl McCollum.  The ladies were delighted to welcome 4 new members.  Jenny and Doreen provided tea, bringing the meeting to a close.

 

Killultagh                   President Elizabeth Halliday welcomed everyone to the January meeting. Secretary Heather Adair read the minutes and a letter from Marie Darrah about tree planting. A quiz was held and Veronica Browne was the winner. Veronica was also the birthday girl and received flowers and chocolates. Everyone joined in with a fun Beetle Drive – Betty Connor had the highest score and Elizabeth Halliday the lowest. The monthly competition was judged as follows: 1st Jennifer Brazil, joint 2nd Elizabeth Hendon and Olive Campbell. Olive and Kathy Yuille won the ballot prizes.

In February, the ladies were joined by guest speakers Rachel and Rebecca – owners of Rare Grazing NI. They explained how they started their catering business and presented each member with delicious samples of salami, cheese and biscuits – and a chocolate coated strawberry!  They then demonstrated how to make a stunning salami rose!  The winners of the monthly competition were: 1st Betty Connor, 2nd Alice McMurtry, 3rd Elizabeth Hendron.  The ballot winners were Maeve Campbell and Peggy Megarry.  Margaret Hollinger was the birthday girl.

 

Kilrea                  For their December meeting, the Kilrea ladies enjoyed a special Christmas dinner, held in The Manor Hotel, Kilrea. After the delicious meal, Geri O’Kane entertained everyone with her festive songs.

President Jennifer Gardiner welcomed everyone in February. Once WI business was dealt with, the ladies enjoyed a fun-filled armchair aerobics session, led by fellow member Geri O’Kane. The competition for ‘a photograph of something that makes me smile’ was won by Sheena Gilmore.

 

Laurelvale                          The Laurelvale ladies met on 9th February, with two new members joining – Ann Hepburn and Beatrice Carson.  The guest speaker was Alan Magwood from Armagh. Alan displayed a fantastic array of his handcrafted walking sticks and outlined the different sizes, materials and uses.  He described the creative process of steaming, straightening, sanding and polishing, before grading for weight, balance, taper, size and shapeliness! Crafting the blackthorn stick may be a dying art, probably because of the time and patience required to produce them. Carole McGarry gave the vote of thanks.  The competition for a decorative blackthorn was won by:`1st Caroline Whitten, 2nd Madge Tate, 3rd Caroline Whitten.  Ballot prizes were won by Ann Hepburn and Jean Abraham.

 

Leckpatrick                      The February meeting was held in Fox Lodge Cricket Club.  Fellow member Gail Sproule led a class of armchair aerobics. These gentle exercises, which are done to music, stretch muscles and improve health and well-being. Ivy Bell thanked Gail for her enjoyable demonstration, in which everyone could participate. The tea hostesses were Betty Brace and Anne Smith.  The competition for the oldest calendar was won by Karen Wray, with runners-up Alison McCrea and Anne Smith.

 

Lisbellaw                       President Freda Beacon welcomed everyone to the February meeting and introduced the guest speaker, Edna Wigham.  Edna had prepared some wonderful quizzes and started off the proceedings with a lovely poem, entitled ‘Dreams’. Much hilarity was had with the quizzes!  This was followed by a cup of tea, kindly made by Betty McElroy, after which President Freda conducted the business, arranging speakers for the next three months. President Freda thanked everyone for coming out, and this brought the meeting to a close.

 

Loughbrickland                            The got together for the Institute’s 66th birthday dinner in the Belmont Hotel on Monday 14th February. Everyone enjoyed a beautiful meal, after which they were entertained by Belinda O’Neil who shared the story of how she came to write a very inspirational book called Be Inspired to Be. After a question and answer session, Belinda judged the competition for a homemade birthday card and the winners were: 1st Valerie Fegan, 2nd Anita Cowan. President Reta Mulligan and Mabel Geoghegan cut the special birthday cake made by Alex Woods.

Macosquin                     In January, members learnt about the initiative ‘Recycle for Kicks Count NI’ – which began 7 years ago, started by Vicki Seviour, and now has 4,000 volunteers who collect single use plastic, such as sweetie wrappers – sending 200kg in 50 tightly packed boxes to be recycled through Terracycle.  This is turned into plastic furniture and playground equipment, producing funding of £114,000 for Kicks Count, to raise awareness of baby movements to reduce still births and neonatal death rate. Never underestimate one woman’s determination to show gratitude by fundraising after life changing advice by Kicks Count!

President Jenny Creelman welcomed members to the February meeting and congratulated Eileen Richmond on placing 2nd in the Federation’s ‘Design a WI Scarf’ competition.  The guest speaker was Geri Martin, whose dream of being a chocolatier became a reality.  After selling her first chocolates, Geri realised she needed help and Invest NI and Causeway Coast and Glens Council provided help and support in different ways to grow her business.  Now, many prestigious firms in Northern Ireland and beyond showcase Geri’s hard work and business acumen in quality, bespoke chocolate products, made at The Chocolate Manor in Castlerock.

 

Maghaberry             President Ann welcomed a good turnout at the January meeting.  The guest speaker was Maureen O’Dowd from the Neo Natal Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Maureen gave a comprehensive illustrated presentation on the work that is carried out in the Unit. She was presented with the hats, blankets and outfits that had been knitted by Maghaberry members and friends. Heather C thanked Maureen. The competition for a baby photo was won by: 1st Rosena, 2nd Mary, 3rd Janet. The birthday girl was Ina.

In February, President Ann Henning welcomed guest speaker Claire Woods, manager of Hillsborough Castle Gardens, who gave an illustrated talk on the work that goes on in the 98 acre grounds. The Gardens are run by an independent charity which generates all its own finances. Claire showcased beautiful scenes, features and flowers, including Wisteria, Azaleas, Rhodendrons and Lady Alice’s Temple. There is a programme of special events and activities in the Castle grounds during the year. Irenee won the Floral Trophy, with Janet placing 2nd and Audrey B 3rd.  The ballot winners were Yvonne, Sharon, Pauline, Audrey, Irenee and Heather.  The birthday girl was Audrey.

 

Maghera                The November and December meetings were combined with a visit to Kilcronaghan Parish Church in Tobermore, where story of Christmas was beautifully told through the medium of craft and artwork from various schools, churches and community groups in the area. Afterwards, members enjoyed a delicious festive afternoon tea in the church hall.

In January, local minister Rev. Gareth Stewart, assisted by his wife Cherrie, cooked some tasty Italian dishes and entertained with humorous anecdotes about his foodie travels – a sunny start to a miserable winter evening!  The birthday girls were Margaret McCracken, Betty Paul and Freda Porter. Margaret also won the competition.

In February, members put themselves in the hands of two local ladies, Christine and Marjorie, who (with great patience) taught a couple of line dances! Great fun and great exercise! The competition winner was Merilyn Carmichael, with runner-up Amy Martin. Amy was also the February birthday girl.

 

Magheramorne                      In December, members made lovely Christmas door decorations using fresh greenery, ribbon and other accessories, under the expert guidance of fellow member Margaret Liddle. Maureen Atkinson provided shortbread and mulled wine and supper was provided by Yvonne Thompson and Elizabeth Nelson.

President Eithne Workman welcomed everyone to the January meeting. Bertha McClelland entertained with three rounds of an alphabet game, which was most enjoyable – once everyone got the hang of it!  The competition for ‘the most unusual item in your handbag’ was won by Gill Lewis – with a pair of walking false teeth!  The tea hostesses for the evening were Margaret Liddle and Bertha McClelland.

In February, the guest speaker was fellow member Gill Lewis, who gave a fascinating and informative talk about her demanding job as a police support worker in Leeds.  The competition for an old coin was won by Margaret Liddle, who also helped provide the supper along with Gill Lewis and Peggy Morrow.

 

Maze                       In January, fellow member Jacqueline McCaughey gave an insight into the work of MindWise, a leading mental health charity in Northern Ireland, where she works as an area manager.  She spoke about the history of the organisation, outlining the range of services available and how people can access these. The monthly competition for a tip to support your mental health was won by Anne Graham. January’s birthday winner was Cathy Robinson.

At the February meeting, Megan and Philip Haire from Glorious Bakes joined members on Valentine’s night and demonstrated how to decorate cupcakes, with Megan showing her piping skills. Philip then arranged the decorated cupcakes so they looked like a bouquet of roses. The competition winner for a ‘no bake’ tray bake was Edna Moneypenny. Flowers were presented to Esther Law who had recently celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary.

 

Moneyrea                           The January meeting was cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

In February, the guest speaker was supposed to be a representative from the PSNI with a ‘Scam Alert’ presentation, but unfortunately they cancelled at the last minute!  Not to worry, Assistant Secretary Gail Givan stepped in and shared some good tips on how to avoid getting scammed!  This was very interesting and led to great discussion. Gail then went on to chair the quiz which she had set. Placing 1st and winning the Kay Campbell Bowl was Jennifer Skelly.  The competition for an old key was won by: 1st Jennifer Skelly, 2nd Anne Graham. The good handwriting challenge for the Linda Bryce Cup was judged as follows: 1st Jennifer Skelly, 2nd Laura McAleese. The birthday girl for January was Eileen Burns, and for February Lyn Campbell. The ballot was won by Laura McAleese.

 

Mosside                     The December meeting was filled with foliage, ribbons, Christmas balls and decorations, as Elaine McConaghie and Dorothy Moore demonstrated and assisted the ladies in making their own Christmas wreaths.  It was lovely to hear all the chatter and laughter (of course all socially distanced!) Everyone enjoyed being together again.  A Zoom call was organised for the ladies who could not attend due to the Covid restrictions/shielding, even delivering foliage to their homes, so they too could take part in the evening!  President Mary McCracken welcomed new member Lorna Laverty to the group.  Unfortunately, due to the rise in Covid cases in the area, the January Craft Morning had to be cancelled and will be reorganised for another occasion.

 

Mossley                     Nine members, including new member Anne Wasson (previously a member of Carnmoney WI), braved the weather to attend the January meeting where a quiz on Christmas was on the agenda! The winner was Ann Graham, with Isobel Bingham receiving a booby prize! Dorothy Auld won the ballot.  Members sang Happy Birthday to President Jennifer Cosgrove whose birthday was the following day.

In February, members enjoyed craft and a tale of yarn under the chairmanship of Vice-President Angela O’Connor. Various members read poems or told funny stories. Knitting and sewing took place and everyone enjoyed a catch up. Lilian Smyth won the ballot.

 

Mountnorris                  At the November meeting, members took part in a craft and natter session under the guidance of fellow member Vanessa Fessey who provided card making kits.   Member Hazel McKee also brought along her menagerie of knitted animals which she makes for Balmoral Show and other charities.

Members met again in February and enjoyed a quiz.  The birthday girl was Jacqueline Lyttle.  A welcome cup of tea and plenty of chat brought the evening to a close.

 

Newtownbreda                 On 7th January, the Newtownbreda ladies enjoyed a visit to The Belvoir Player’s Studio to see their hilarious interpretation of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.  Such a terrific start to 2022 and hopefully the pattern of the months to come, as members return to friendship and fun! The new programme is varied and interesting, with many activities and speakers planned to engage members in the year ahead.  Many thanks to President Jenny Stewart and all the Committee ladies for their planning and hard work going forward in 2022.

In February, the guest speaker was Lisa Haycock, Mental Health Champion and Trainer from Farrans Construction Company. Part of Lisa’s job is to train a  ‘mental health first aider,’ so each of Farrans many sites have someone on the staff they can turn to in a crisis. Thanks to Lisa’s remarkable ability, the programme she conceived and set up on ‘Mental Health in the Workplace’ will be rolled out to other companies, as employers realise that talking over problems is vital to maintain a healthy, happy workforce.  On a lighter note, the competition was for a good joke and Jane Laverick was a worthy winner. The birthday girl was Jean Blythe who celebrated her 90th. Congratulations Jean!  Members were delighted to welcome Meta Campbell to the meeting and hope she will decide to join this happy throng!

 

Newtownstewart          A warm welcome was given to  members who enjoyed a fun night of ‘Flexercise’ with Elsie! Elsie explained how she was introduced to this form of exercise back in New Zealand, and outlined how she became the first qualified instructor in Northern Ireland three years ago. Members were put through their paces, paying great attention to balance and core control as part of an all-round workout. After the usual WI business, the meeting closed with A Countrywoman’s Song .

 

Portstewart                 In January, President Susan Lyons welcomed everyone back after a two month break. Members watched a video of the Christmas Lights Show which is held every year at Kew Gardens. The winners of the flower quiz were Mary Smyth, Joan Wright and Betty Cummins. The winner of the Christmas quiz was Iris Jamieson, with runners-up Joan Wright and Margaret Clarke.

 

Richhill                     Members of Richhill WI were delighted to get together for their February meeting in ‘The Hub’ (kindly granted). New member Amanda Borland was welcomed. The meeting continued with ‘A Trip Down Memory Lane’, ably hosted by Vice-President Sybil McNally who displayed a array of memorabilia and household items, many of which brought back childhood memories – and lots of reminiscing!  The Richhill ladies are delighted to be celebrating their platinum anniversary, at the same time as another fellow WI member – namely HRH The Queen!  A special dinner will be held in Portadown Golf Club.  Reports from the Federation were given by Lynd Roper, and Pat Harrison updated everyone on the Arts Sub-Committee, with members delighted to learn that the Music Festival will return in 2022 – so a lot of vocal cords will have to be finely tuned!

 

Saintfield                      Twenty members of Saintfield WI travelled to French’s Bistro for Christmas dinner.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal, delighted to be able to be together again for the festive season.  Josephine Copes was the birthday girl. Many lucky ladies won prizes in the ballot.  Each member donated something to the Kilmore Food Bank. Irene Craig thanked the staff of French’s Bistro who prepared and served the meal. She wished members a Happy Christmas and hoped to see everyone at  January meeting…

Unfortunately the January meeting was cancelled due the high incidences of Covid!

…Then, on the morning of the February meeting, the invited guest speaker tested positive for Covid!  The ladies decided to go ahead and meet anyway, instead playing some fun games of Beetle. From the amount of noise and laughter in the hall it was clear that everyone enjoyed themselves!  Joan Agnew won the cookery competition. Elizabeth won the craft and floral art competitions.  The birthday girls were Evelyn McMillen (January) and Jessie Thompson (February).  Irene Craig won the ballot prize.

 

Seaforde                     In February, President Annabel Cleland welcomed members and visitors to the meeting and annual auction, with funds going to ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World). Margaret Broome, a past President of the Institute and current Federation Chairman, acted as auctioneer, while Annabel acted as the auction porter and displayed each lot.  There were four large tables containing items that members had donated for the occasion – paperbacks, jewellery, cosmetics, scented candles, candle snuffers, doorstops, handbags, purses, garden pieces, many vases – and many, many more bits and bobs, too numerous to mention!  The bidding was very competitive, much to the amusement of everyone, and £350 was raised. The ballot was won by a member from Ardglass WI.  The competition was won by: 1st Cilla Green, 2nd Jennifer Robinson, 3rd Hilda Fleming.  The birthday girls were: December – Maria Forsythe, January – Margaret Broome, February – Jennifer Doherty.

 

St. John’s                 For the first meeting of the New Year 2022, St. John’s members enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Pot Belly restaurant, Tullylish with restrictions of six to each table. Remaining seated, members took part in competitions to showcase their most colourful purse, highest heels, largest diary and longest earrings – to mention just a few! Afterwards, the ladies had more time to chat before the successful evening came to a close.

‘Bay Tree Cottage Journey’ was the topic of the February meeting, when owner Susan McCaigue shared her story, discussing her family life and the beginnings of her B&B dream. Due to Covid everything changed and she moved on to develop her present successful self-catering business.  She gave an interesting insight into her job using photographs and relaying anecdotes of memorable visitors to her cottage. The competition to find the best ‘napkin for a romantic meal’ was won by: 1st Linda Ingles, 2nd Pamela Fitzpatrick, 3rd Elizabeth Ward.

 

Tamlaght                       President Iris welcomed everyone to the February meeting, when members were delighted to be joined by Rhoda Farrelly, Erne Area Executive Member/International Sub-Committee Chairman, who had come along at short notice.  Rhoda gave a detailed insight into the work of the Sub-Committee and of ACWW.  A very talented lady, Rhoda also displayed some of her handicrafts, along with a crochet heart in celebration of Valentine’s Day.  Josie thanked Rhoda for her very informative talk.  This was followed by a lovely supper provided by Laura.  Josie Muldoon won the ballot prize.

 

Templepatrick                     The Institute’s annual Christmas dinner was held in the Rosspark Hotel.

Terrydremond              President Ruth MacCombe welcomed everyone to the January meeting, including new member Sandra Mullan.  The invited guest speaker for evening was unable to attend at short notice, so Ruth and Secretary Daphne Garrett stepped up by organising some fun quizzes, along with a few games of Boggle – thoroughly enjoyable!  The competition for a fabric brooch was won by: 1st Pamela Buchanan, 2nd Noelle Graham, 3rd Jennifer Deighan.

In February, Robert Wheeldon shared an insight into his work with Coastal Core, Limavady.  Since its foundation in 2010, it has grown to become one of Northern Ireland’s leading First Aid Training Providers, First Aid Suppliers and a Private Ambulance Service Provider working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.  The competition winners for an old fashioned first aid remedy were: 1st Sandra Mullan, 2nd Pamela Buchanan, 3rd Chris Ross.

 

Waringstown                In December, President Brenda Brown welcomed everyone to Members’ Night, handing over to Elizabeth after Hazel read the minutes.  She introduced Martha and Lettie who regaled with tales of Christmasses of their youth, with lots of reminiscing from members!  Dawn read a Christmas poem, Elizabeth told shared some funnies, and a quick handbag quiz followed.  The Birthday girl was Dorothy Kane. A Covid-style supper consisted of goodie bags and members bringing their own drinks!  The pleasant evening ended with some Carol singing.

Meetings resumed in February, with Brenda welcoming everyone.  The evening began on a sombre note as members stood in quiet reflection in memory of Dorothy Kane, a much-loved member who sadly passed away suddenly. Dorothy will be much missed. The guest speaker was Patricia McGuinness, who gave an interesting video presentation of her Scottish homeland, including lots of little-known facts.  After Hazel read the minutes, Brenda announced that Anne Miller was now an honorary member of Waringstown WI!  Pat won the competition. Lettie was the birthday girl for January, and Harriett for February.
