The weather was kind to the twenty-six lady golfers who teed off amidst the beautiful surroundings of Newtownstewart Golf Course for the Annual WI Golf Competition on Monday the 3rd June 2013.  Some of the ladies had travelled long distances with many having an early start but it was great to see the enthusiasm and sportsmanship which was displayed after a welcome cup of coffee and a delicious scone.  These were served up by the caterer, for whom nothing was too much trouble.  Sufficiently recharged, the golfers made their way out to the tee boxes to commence their round, having had their handicaps agreed.  Approximately three and a half hours later, and after an abundance of fine drives and accurate putts, the ladies returned in their groups and handed in their cards to be marked, before heading to the restaurant to enjoy their well-deserved meal.

Many old friendships which had been made on other golf courses were renewed and lots of WI catching up was done!  Chairman of the Magazine & Leisure Committee, Roberta Hall then took the opportunity to thank all who had taken part in the competition and encouraged them to ‘spread the word’ amongst their golfing WI friends and perhaps enter next year.  Roberta thanked the President, the lady captain and the wonderful staff at Newtownstewart Golf Club whose help and hospitality made the event a success.  Then came the serious business of the results, and the distribution of the many golfing-inspired prizes.

The Federation Chairman Margaret Collinson and Vice Chairman Irene Craig had kindly travelled down with the ladies and Mrs Collinson was called upon to present the awards as follows:

After the presentations, Margaret Collinson congratulated all of the winners and all who had taken part in the competition.  Margaret thanked the members of the Magazine & Leisure Sub-Committee for organising the event and everyone at Newtownstewart Golf Club for their great welcome to the WI.  Roberta then brought the day to a close and presented Margaret with a beautiful floral arrangement.  Twenty-six very tired golfers then went home-  some on to their Institute meetings later that night! A great day out was had by all!
