Featuring Owen Mac!

The Arts Sub-Committee organised their triennial Evening of Light Entertainment, held this year in the Burnavon Theatre, Cookstown on Friday 28th September.

Arts Sub-Committee Chairman Lesley Dowds warmly welcomed the large audience to the show, before handing the proceedings over to the compere, Kathleen Moore from Ballievey WI, who amused the audience with funny stories and poetry between the various acts.

Caledon WI were the opening performance, with their humorous sketch entitled ‘A Pair of Socks’. This was followed by Margaret Taylor of Downpatrick WI, an accomplished soprano, who sang three well known songs – Where’er You Walk by Handel, The Meeting of the Waters and The Holy City.     Maud Steele from Kilrea WI brought lots of laughter with three hilarious recitations. Next on the programme was the Ballyblack WI Quartet who sang Bridge Over Troubled Water and Can You Feel the Love, with sweet harmony and great emotion.   Crumlin WI brought the first half of the programme to a close with their enthusiastic rendition of Master of The House from Les Misérables.

After the interval, the star of the second half of the show was the very talented, 15-year-old country and western singer Owen Mac.  Owen was accompanied on guitar by his Dad, Dessie, who also sang a few songs. Owen performed many requests from the audience and had to extend the length of his planned programme because of the demand for encore.

Federation Chairman Collette Craig drew the ballot tickets for the many prizes and Arts Sub-Committee member Margaret Broome delivered a comprehensive Vote of Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of a wonderful Evening of Light Entertainment.  In keeping with tradition, the singing of A Countrywoman’s Song concluded another memorable event on the WI calendar.
