WI Golfer of The Year – Back on Course for 2022!
Newtownstewart Golf Club – Monday 20th June 2022
Members of the Magazine and Leisure Sub-Committee were delighted to be back on course to host the Federation’s annual Golf tournament, after a hiatus since June 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 16 WI golfers made the journey to Newtownstewart Golf Club to compete for the Milk Marketing Board Salver and the coveted title of ‘WI Golfer of the Year 2022’, playing an 18-hole Stableford competition.
This was lower number than in previous years, due to the distance to travel for some of the usual competitors. The ladies who sailed forth came from Institutes in counties Antrim, Down and Londonderry. They were greeted with glorious sunshine, so there was no excuse for poor golf, apart from heat stroke or dehydration!
Everyone enjoyed playing the course and afterwards they sat down for a lovely meal provided by Adrian, the Golf Club caterer. The golfers were joined for the meal by Federation Chairman Margaret Broome, Magazine and Leisure Sub-Committee Chairman Christine Rankin, Clogher Valley Area Executive Member/Committee Member Violet Little and Abercorn Area Executive Member Joan Beattie.
Christine gave a short speech and after the meal Margaret presented the prizes, in traditional reverse order! The good weather was reflected in the scores with the overall winner, WI Golfer of the Year 2022, being Christine Duddy of Armoy WI. Everyone enjoyed their day at Newtownstewart and hopefully more ladies who play golf will compete next year.
