CROSSGAR CELEBRATES 65 YEARS

Our President, Sheila McMurray, welcomed members and guests to our Annual Dinner adding that 2013/14 is a special year and marks the 65th year since Crossgar Institute’s formation in 1948.

In her address the President said that during 1948 a small group of ladies came together and decided to form a Women’s Institute in Crossgar with the first meeting held on 27th October 1948 when a committee of 10 members was elected.  Subscription for the year at that time was 2 shillings, or 10p in today’s money.  Members brought one teaspoon of tea and sugar plus food for one and of course, your own cup.

Meetings were held on 1st Monday of each month in the Primary School until the War Memorial Hall opened in 1952.

It is fantastic that 65 years later we are enjoying our Annual Dinner in La Mon House Hotel celebrating a legacy we are proud of and must carry on.

Members had a wonderful dinner with excellent service from the Hotel staff which was enjoyed by all.  Our area Executive Member, Mrs Nora Lennon, assisted Mrs Rhona Niblock to cut the cake made by one of our members.

The birthday girl was Olga Cairns and competition winner Madge Andrews.

Mr Brian Johnston entertained us with music, singing and many yarns.  It was great to hear everyone laugh and enjoy the evening which concluded with the singing of the Country Women’s Song.
